假如

假如你能作夢──而不成為夢的奴隸；
假如你能思考──而不是以思考為目的；
假如你能面對勝利和慘敗，而把這兩個騙子一視同仁；

英國詩人與散文作家吉卜林 ( Joseph Rudyard Kipling，1865-1936, 也有人譯為吉卜齡，或吉百齡) 在 1895 年寫過一首詩「假如」 (IF—)。

吉卜林在 1907 年獲得諾貝爾文學獎，是首位英語作家，也是至今最年輕的文學獎得主。

出生在印度，處於英國殖民地環境的吉卜林，作品中因帶有濃厚的帝國主義與種族主義色彩而常有所爭議。
2007 年還曾有一部電影 My Boy Jack 描寫了他一心寄望兒子為大英帝國參加第一次世界大戰，最後為國捐軀的故事。

老實說，表面上「假如」似乎是勉勵他兒子的詩作，但仔細推敲也有一絲類似的氣息。
不過撇開這一點，這首詩的寓意仍然十分耐人尋味。
